AESA in partnership with AMREF Health Africa proudly announces the successful completion of the EU-funded Technical Assistance to Support the Ministry of Health and Regional Governments to Manage the Social Determinants of Health (SDH) for Gender Equality Programme in Ethiopia (EuropeAid/140165/DH/SER/ET).
Implemented from June 2020 to October 2025, the project has strengthened both the Ministry of Health and well as 4 Regional Health Bureau’s capacity to coordinate and manage four regional grants addressing key social determinants of health — including gender equality, nutrition, and access to basic services — with a focus on women, adolescent girls, and children under five.
Through AESA’s Technical Assistance Team deployed in Addis Ababa and 4 regions (Afar, Somali, Benhishangul Gumuz & Gambella), the programme:
- Guided the design and approval of four evidence-based regional grants aligned with the Health Sector Transformation Plan II;
- Delivered extensive capacity-building and on-the-job training on project management, procurement, monitoring & evaluation, and EU financial procedures;
- Supported the construction and equipping of new service facilities, provision of vehicles and ambulances, and improvement of WaSH and nutrition services;
- Facilitated the establishment of multi-sectoral and steering committees to ensure coordinated governance between the Ministry, regional authorities, and the EU Delegation;
- Conducted regular performance reviews and supervision missions, ensuring compliance, transparency, and sustainable impact.
