Background & Objectives
The project aims to enhance the resilience of island communities in the southwest Indian Ocean to climate change impacts, addressing vulnerabilities to floods, droughts, storms, tropical cyclones, and rising sea levels. It focuses on bridging disparities in technical capacity and resources among IOC countries, tailored to meet specific national and regional needs. The project aligns with GFCS and WMO standards to improve weather data collection and utilization.
Activities
- Establish a Regional Climate Centre Network and Climate Services frameworks in the SWIO region, supporting NMHS operations and Hydromet laws with potential funding from CIEWS.
- Enhance staffing capabilities in the RCC-Network, NMHSs, and related institutions, improving technical designs and tendering processes for project activities.
- Upgrade hydrometeorological observations using innovative technologies, establish regional maintenance and training facilities, and improve Climate Product (CP-CS) and MH-IBFEWS production, dissemination, and utilization..
Results
- Establish a regional climate centre and frameworks for climate services to enhance coordination in the SWIO region.
- Strengthen national weather services’ institutional frameworks and operational strategies to improve climate information delivery.
- Enhance hydrometeorological monitoring and forecasting capabilities, supported by improved research and training facilities.
