Background & Objectives

• The EUR 22M AU ClimSA Grant aims to enhance sustainable development in Africa by strengthening the climate services value chain. This involves improving access to climate information, generating services, and building capacity for effective utilization. Key focus areas include Regional Climate Centres, where efforts will bolster technical capabilities, capacity building, and institutional strength. The African Union and Regional Economic Communities will serve as intermediaries, facilitating climate services to policy-makers, planners, and communities. Dialogue mechanisms will be established to enhance interaction between service providers and users, ensuring optimal utilization of climate services.

Activities

• Develop project management tools and oversee implementation for ClimSA PMU, providing guidance on policy coordination with AUC, RECs, and Regional Organizations.

• Support AUC grant activities at ECCAS level, liaise with ECCAS, CAPC-AC, and ACMAD, and assist ClimSA Experts with work plan execution and problem-solving.

• Coordinate with OACPS/TAT on M&E, communication strategies, and capacity building, while promoting peer review of climate services, contributing to Africa State of Climate Report/Climate Outlook, and organizing Africa Continental Climate Services Fora.

Results

• Strengthen capacity of AUC ClimSA PMU for effective project management and develop a sustainability strategy for ongoing climate services.

• Enhance African RCCs’ capacity to tailor climate services for diverse sectors, with a focus on ECCAS RCCs

• Establish robust systems within AUC, RCCs, and in collaboration with EUMETSAT and JRC for designing, planning, and optimizing data access infrastructure and equipment for climate services.

• Implement processes to bolster and sustain continental cooperation frameworks among ClimSA partners and promote collaboration among RCCs.
