Technical assistance for the implementation of the food and nutrition security program in Burkina Faso

Description of the project and Services provided:

Burkina Faso is a country where the economy is based on agriculture, which is the engine of growth. It employees more than 80% of the active population, contributes approximately 40% of PIB and provides on average 60% of export earnings. In 2003 the Government adopted the National Food Security Strategy with the goal of reducing by 50% the number of people suffering from hunger and malnutrition by 2015 (OMD 1).

The overall project objectives are to contribute in improving food and nutrition security in Burkina Faso and the achievement of MDG 1 by 2015, in the scoop of the Accelerated Growth Strategy and Sustainable Development (AGSSD). More widely, the action would contribute to the achievement of MDGs 4 and 5, and the strengthening of institutional and political system of food security in Burkina Faso.

The specific objective action is to ensure food and nutritional security sustainable for the poorest populations in most affected regions by food insecurity and malnutrition while strengthening the institutional and political food security governance. Targeted intervention areas are Sahel, North-Central, North, East and Mouhoun regions. In total, it is estimated that 85,000 households, in clear around 595 000 poor’s and vulnerable people will directly benefited from this Action. These will be supported in a various way through operational activities of 3 project components. The food safety device capabilities and technical services, ONG, professional organizations and basics communities, also policies in the field of food and nutrition security will be strengthened.
